Cortland Pounds Curry 42-0 in NCAA Second Round

November 29, 2008. The SUNY Cortland Red Dragons destroyed the Curry Colonels 42-0 Saturday in an NCAA Second Round East Regional match. The victory marked the first time Cortland has won two consecutive teams in the NCAA tournament.

 

Senior quarterback Ray Miles completed 17-of-29 passes for 279 yards and 4 touchdowns to lead Cortland. Zacc Guaragno caught 6 passes for 127 yards, including a 78-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter. Eric Hajnos added 4 catches for 67 yards and 2 touchdowns.

 

The SUNY Cortland defense played its best game of the season in its biggest test to date. Cortland limited a high powered Curry offense to only 208 yards of total offense. The Red Dragons held Curry to just 2.0 yards per rush attempt, and caused 4 turnovers. Richard Rolo led the way with 10 tackles, 1.5 for losses. Bryan Wiley had 7 tackles, 2 behind the line of scrimmage. Lou Crispo, Brian Haas, and Josh Jablonski had sacks. D.J. Romano and Will Schroeder had interceptions.

 

 

Cortland went ahead 7-0 midway through the first quarter on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Miles to fullback Dave Murphy. The score increased to 14-0 in the second quarter on an Eric Hajnos touchdown reception. Two minutes later, Miles hooked up with Guaragno for a 78-yard deep post touchdown to put Cortland ahead 21-0.

 

On Cortland's first drive of the third quarter the Red Dragons went 52 yards on 5 plays for another touchdown. Miles hit Hajnos on a 27-yard crossing pattern for a touchdown to put Cortland ahead 28-0, and the rout was on.

 

Derrick Woodard had a 34-yard kickoff return and a 43-yard punt return. Woodard and the SUNY Cortland special teams return unit gave Cortland excellent field position the entire game.

 

Cortland travels to Alliance, Ohio next Saturday to face #1 nationally ranked Mount Union.
