Fisher Defeats Cortland 34-20 in ECAC Northwest Bowl
November 21, 2009. The St. John Fisher Cardinals captured the 2009 ECAC Northwest Bowl Championship with a 34-20 victory over SUNY Cortland. The Cardinals rallied from a 20-13 deficit in the third quarter to score the game's final 21 points.
The Cardinals rolled up 366 yards of offense and 25 first downs against Cortland. Quarterback Tim Bailey passed for 256 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing for 70 yards and another touchdown to lead St. John Fisher.
Alex Smith passed for 198 yards and three touchdowns for Cortland, but was intercepted twice. Senior Wide Receiver Eric Hajnos completed a fantastic career with 11 receptions for 90 yards and two touchdowns.
Senior punter Kyle Peterson was 5 for 5 landing punts inside the Cardinals 20-yard line, with no touchbacks. Sophomore Cornerback D.J. Romano had 11 tackles, seven solo, and broke up 3 passes. Will Schroeder added 9 tackles, 1.5 for losses. Linebacker Bobby Somerville intercepted a pass, and Defensive End Bryan Wiley ended his career catching a touchdown pass in the third quarter while lining up on offense.
Cortland finished the season with a 7-4 overall record, 7-2 in the NJAC. St. John Fisher wrapped up a 7-3 season with a well deserved ECAC Northwest Bowl victory. Both teams will look to contend for NCAA playoff births next season.
