The comeback story of 2009 has to be Alex Smith. The graduate student's career comeback had its finest moment so far, when Smith passed for 324 yards and four touchdowns at Brockport Saturday in a 56-42 victory. Smith's performance earned him a spot on the D3Football.com National Team of the Week.

The 324 yards passing set a new single game career record for Smith. His four touchdown passes were just one shy of the Red Dragons single game record of five, which Smith holds a share of. Cortland has won four consecutive games since Smith was named the starting quarterback.

Smith was an active player from 2004 through 2006, and for one game in 2007. His 2006 season ended to an ACL injury at Western Connecticut. In his first game returning from injury in 2007, he re-injured his ACL against Morrisville. Smith served as a Red Dragons football assistant coach in 2008 and for the beginning of 2009. After Dan Pitcher was lost to injury, Smith sought and was granted an NCAA waiver to use for a final year of eligibility this season.
