Alex Smith Returns to Quarterback the Red Dragons

Rumors that former star quarterback Alex Smith was planning to return to lead the SUNY Cortland football team were confirmed today. The NCAA granted Smith an additional semester of eligibility.

Smith is not expected to return to quarterback until at least October 10, and will not suit up for SUNY Cortland's trip to Buffalo State tomorrow. Junior Hudson Woodward is expected to start at Buffalo State.

Smith served as a volunteer coach to Dan MacNeill's staff in 2008, and in 2009 has handled the Wide Receivers and Return teams as a graduate assistant.

Alex Smith is sixth all-time on the career passing yardage list for SUNY Cortland, despite losing approximately one-and-a-half seasons to injury. Smith is also fourth all-time in career passing touchdowns with 35, just behind Dick Puccio's (1988-1991) 40.

Alex Smith's promising career was cut short by two ACL injuries.
